A |     Colombo, Oct 13 (UNI) Nearly 500 doctors have migrated from Sri Lanka and another 800 could go to escape the continuing economic crisis in the country, it was reported on Thursday.

The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) provided the grim statistics on Wednesday, The Island newspaper reported.

GMOA Secretary Dr Haritha Aluthge said the figures were from January to August this year. He warned that the trend would continue unless the government took tangible measures to arrest the situation.

He asserted that a recent decision to retire all public servants at age 60 would worsen the situation. In case the government went ahead with the move, the public health system would lose about 800 doctors including around 300 specialists.

He added that services at some government hospitals were on the verge of collapse.
